Oregano oil – Benefits and side effects


Oregano is a herb belonging to the mint family and one of the most used herbs in any kitchen. Oregano, botanically known as Origanum Vulgare and commonly known as ‘pizza herb’ is widely used in Italian and Mediterranean cuisine but has been accepted world-wide for its rich aroma and taste. 

This herb is mainly grown in South and Central Asia, Europe and the Mediterranean region. Although the herb is mainly used as a spice and aromatic in cuisines, in its dried form, it is also known to be used in the oil form. 

Oregano oil is extracted from the oregano plant in its wild state. This oil is widely used for its many medicinal properties. Numerous studies and research has shown the beneficial effects of the oil mainly because of the presence of two compounds known as carvacrol and thymol. Both have been found to have the ability to fight against harmful disease causing microorganisms in the human body.


Among the many properties of oregano oil, it has been known to boost the immune system and help in fighting germs and infection causing agents in the body.
The fresh oregano leaves are rich in manganese, iron and omega 3 fatty acids. These properties present in the oil, aids in digestion and helps in treating stomach upsets. Adding 2-3 drops of oregano oil in water is found to provide relief from stomach upset.

Skin infections can be treated as the oil contains anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. It can aid in the destruction of organisms that cause skin infection and diseases. 

Oregano oil can be directly applied to the skin to get relief from itching, rashes and other infections, however the oil has to be diluted by mixing with other oils first. It is also known to aid in the treatment of dandruff when mixed with coconut oil.

Massaging your body, especially legs with oregano oil can provide relaxation and help to internally heal your body from tiredness and also provide immunity.

Muscle spasms, pains and cramps are found to be relieved by massaging a few drops of oregano oil. It is also known to aid in increasing the flexibility of joints and muscles.

Adding a few drops of oregano oil and drinking with a glass of water for 3-5 days will help in severe cold, sinusitis, and in relieving lung congestion.


Oregano oil has also been found to have anti-oxidants which help in cleansing the system of harmful toxins.

Side Effects: Even though oil of oregano has been established as an essential oil having medicinal properties, it has some harmful effects and should not be taken without a consultation and proper research. 


Oil of oregano has been found to impact the body’s iron consumption and hence women should be extra careful while taking oregano oil.


**People who are prone to allergies with other herbs might have the same allergies with oregano as well, and if found to be causing any irritation, the usage should be stopped immediately.
